Our first night in the Union of Myanmar found my aunt and I in Yangon (Rangoon.) It was intense and overstimulating on all the sensory levels. We had the incredibly good fortune to get a taxi driver who eventually helped us sort out the whole trip, which had proved very difficult impossible via the internet from Hong Kong. We eventually would discover that the junta just randomly cuts off the internet to the city; a nice passive-aggressive method of repression.

As we drove in from the airport, our driver said, “The British, they built many things.”

Yes. Yes, they did.
