Sunday in Hong Kong. This is not a great photo quality-wise, but it’s a tricky subject for me. Every Sunday (and some public holidays) the domestic helpers, nearly all of whom are Filipina or Indonesian, get a day off – their one of the week throughout which they pretty much work around the clock. With few options for congregating in private, they fill the breezeways and causeways and public spaces where they will not be bothered. It is an amazing sight to behold and after four years of observing it, it never fails to impress me with the color, the energy, the activity, the sheer volume (literally and figuratively.) It is a photographers dream for all these reasons, but it is hard to not feel really creepy shooting the photos, it seems so invasive somehow. I have thought about this situation a lot. I wrote about it here: It’s class, man That’s class. Anyhow, this is underneath the HSBC Tower in Central: a city within the city.
